Jakarta's air pollution comes mainly from road traffic, with industry and coal-fired power plants in the surrounding region also contributing. The dry season, roughly May to October, brings the worst air, because there is little rain to wash particles out. The Gelora Bung Karno sports complex is a popular place to run, and the Sunday car-free day opens the main avenues, Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Thamrin, to runners.

Jakarta's monthly average AQI over 2023–2025 ranged from about 110 in January, in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range, to about 170 from May to October, in the Unhealthy range.
The rainy season, especially January and February, has the cleanest air. In the dry season, check the AQI before every run and move hard sessions indoors on Unhealthy days. Running early in the morning also helps with the heat.
