Air quality in Shanghai is unhealthy. Avoid prolonged outdoor exertion.
Data from Open-Meteo • Updated 11:00:03 AM
Shanghai's air quality has improved significantly with stricter industrial regulations and vehicle emission standards. The coastal location helps with air circulation, but winter heating season and regional industrial activity can still produce moderate to poor air quality days. The Bund and Huangpu River paths offer waterfront running.

Try it freeShanghai typically sees AQI values between 40 and 100, better than Beijing but still variable. Winter months tend to be worse due to regional heating, while summer sea breezes help disperse pollutants.
Morning runs along the Huangpu River or in Century Park offer the best conditions. Autumn provides the most consistently good air quality. Always check the AQI before heading out, especially in winter.
Industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, construction activity, and regional coal-burning for heating are the main sources. Shanghai also receives transported pollutants from neighboring provinces. The flat terrain and variable wind patterns can lead to pollution accumulation, especially during winter stagnation events.
Century Park in Pudong offers the largest green space near the city center. The Huangpu River promenade benefits from river breezes. Gongqing Forest Park and Binjiang Forest Park provide more natural settings. Avoid running along major elevated highways or in heavy traffic areas during rush hour.
Winter (December–February) typically has the worst air quality due to regional heating emissions and stagnant weather patterns. Summer can bring ozone peaks during heat waves. Autumn (October–November) and late spring often offer the best conditions with sea breezes helping to clear pollutants.
Check the current AQI at the top of this page for real-time conditions. Shanghai’s air quality has improved markedly in recent years but still varies significantly day to day. Always check before heading out, especially in winter months.
