Salt Lake City sits in a valley ringed by mountains, which makes it prone to winter inversions. From about December to February, a lid of warm air can sit over the valley for days and trap fine particles near the ground. Summer brings ozone on hot afternoons and, in some years, wildfire smoke from across the West. Liberty Park, the Jordan River Parkway and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail are popular running routes.

Salt Lake City's monthly average AQI over 2023–2025 stayed between about 48 and 64, in the Good to Moderate range. Averages hide the bad days: strong winter inversions and summer smoke can push readings into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range or higher.
August to October had the cleanest monthly averages. During a winter inversion, poor air often lasts until a passing storm clears the valley, so move hard sessions indoors on Unhealthy days. In summer, run in the morning, before ozone builds in the afternoon.
