Air quality in Ljubljana is good. Safe for outdoor exercise.
Data from ARSO • Updated 7:37:48 AM
Ljubljana's air quality is monitored by ARSO (Slovenian Environment Agency), providing highly accurate local data. The city sits in a basin that can trap pollutants during winter inversions, when PM10 levels rise from residential heating. The car-free city center and proximity to nature make it a runner-friendly city.

Try it freeLjubljana typically sees AQI values between 20 and 55. Winter inversions in the Ljubljana Basin are the main concern, with PM10 from wood-burning heating systems occasionally pushing readings into the Moderate range.
Morning runs along the Ljubljanica river or the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship offer great conditions. Spring through autumn has consistently clean air, while winter runners should check ARSO data for inversion days.
Wood-burning heating systems are the primary source of winter PM10 pollution. The Ljubljana Basin’s geography creates a natural bowl that traps cold air and pollutants during temperature inversions. Vehicle traffic through the city center and nearby motorway corridors also contribute, though the extensive pedestrian zone helps.
The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (Pot spominov in tovarištva) offers a 34 km loop around the city with clean air. Tivoli Park, the Ljubljanica riverbank, and the trails up Rožnik hill are excellent options. For the cleanest air, head to the Šmarna gora trail just outside the city.
Winter (December–February) is by far the worst period, when temperature inversions in the basin trap wood smoke from heating. PM10 can exceed EU limits on cold, still days. Summer air quality is consistently good, and spring and autumn offer excellent running conditions.
Check the current AQI at the top of this page for real-time conditions. Ljubljana has excellent air quality from spring through autumn. In winter, check ARSO (Slovenian Environment Agency) data for inversion alerts before morning runs — midday and afternoon often see better conditions as inversions break up.
